Oran, Algeria and Another Day at Sea
Oran (population 4 million) is a coastal city located in the northwest region of Algeria, famous for its beaches, rich history, and cultural diversity. It was once the capital of the kingdom of Tiemcen, which was one of the wealthiest and most powerful states in North Africa in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Oran is home to the largest natural port on the Mediterranean coast of Africa. It is a melting pot of different cultures with influences from Arab, Berber, French, and Spanish traditions. Oran has played a significant role in the history of Algeria, from its days as a Venetian trading post to its place as a center of resistance during the Algerian War of Independence.

The harbor at Oran
This morning, we visited the Santa Cruz Fort, a historic 16th-century fort and chapel on a high hill overlooking the sea. Also, this morning, we went to the very highest overlook and visited the chapel of Santa Cruz. Amazing views of the city of Oran can be had from there.

I have to say, much to my surprise, I loved being in Algeria. The people were so very friendly, they had so many wonderful greetings, responded so positively when we waved to them from the buses, they waved back. They smiled. They shouted welcome to our faces. They greeted us like long lost friends, asked us to have our picture taken with them.
They loved us. Honestly, driving through the streets of Oran, the people made us feel like we were rock stars.
What an incredible experience! I wish we had had more time in Algeria.Thursday, May 15

Day at Sea
Because of impending winds and higher seas, the Captain dramatically changed the sailing plan for our day at sea. The effect was a big plus for us: a shorter, faster, more scenic route.
